Why Crown Thin a Tree?
Crown Thinning reduces to amount of secondary or tertiary (inner) branches around the tree’s crown that allows for balancing of the tree’s structure without altering the shape or size of the tree. The reduction helps promotes healthy growth and helps to improve the health of the tree, as well as strengthening the tree against adverse weather conditions.
Unlike Crown Reduction, this technique allows helps to maintain the natural look of the tree and results in a more subtle reduction. Using the crown thinning approach to reduce the density of the crown has many positive effects on the tree and its environment:
- Allows for more light to pass through the tree canopy, reducing the amount of shade that the tree produces
- Crown thinning helps to reduce the sail effect of the tree’s crown, thus reducing the likelihood of the tree being pulled down in strong winds
- Removal of the secondary or tertiary branches lightens the weight on individual limbs of the tree and allows for the removal of dead, weak or crossing branches which may impact the health of the tree

However, if your tree is under a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or you live in a conservation area then your Local Authority may have specific guidelines regarding the percentage a tree’s crown can be thinned. We would suggest that you consult your local council before undertaking the work.
